Seasick on boat to Island

Hello! I get seasick easy and also do not like taking any seasickness meds… just wondering if anyone else that gets easily seasick has taken the boat trip over and how was it? Thanks!

Visiting Channel Islands National Park is a fantastic experience, but the boat ride can be challenging for those prone to seasickness. The boats from Ventura or Oxnard to the islands typically take between 1 to 2 hours depending on the island and weather conditions.

Here are some important considerations for someone who gets seasick easily and prefers to avoid medication:

  • The boats are usually high-speed catamarans or smaller vessels, which can feel rough on windy or choppy days. Even moderate swell can make the ride uncomfortable.
  • Mornings tend to have calmer seas than afternoons, so try to book the earliest crossing available.
  • Sitting mid-ship on the lower deck can reduce motion compared to the bow or upper decks.
  • Fresh air helps: stay outside rather than in enclosed cabins if possible.
  • Looking at the horizon can help your body stabilize and reduce nausea.
  • Ginger candies, ginger tea, or acupressure wristbands can be natural ways to help with mild motion sickness if you want to avoid medication.

Other tips:

  • Avoid heavy meals right before boarding. Light snacks like crackers are better.
  • Hydration is important, but sip slowly rather than drinking large amounts at once.
  • Choose a day with calmer weather forecasts if possible. The Channel Islands’ waters can be significantly calmer on certain days, making a big difference for sensitive passengers.
  • Be prepared for sudden shifts in weather and sea conditions; the crew usually advises passengers and provides instructions to stay safe.

Many people who are prone to seasickness have successfully made the trip by following these strategies. However, if you are extremely sensitive, it’s worth discussing your concerns with the boat operator—they may offer tips or even the option to wait for a calmer day if the forecast is rough.

In summary, seasickness can be a real factor, but careful planning with timing, seating choice, and natural remedies can make the Channel Islands boat trip manageable without medication.
