Is Coast Train As Scenic going in both directions

I prefer not to have to get up so early to take the Coast Train to Seward. I am 86. I would need to get up at about 4:30. So I am thinking of going to Seward not on the train but taking the train back to Anchorage. Is this a mistake - ie not to take the train TO Seward but just take the train back TO Anchorage? Will we lose the gorgeous scenery and sense of beauty? Or is there any other reason that this might be a mistake? Thank you.

The Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic Train between Anchorage and Seward is scenic in both directions, so taking the train back to Anchorage is still a fantastic experience. The route follows the Turnagain Arm and the Chugach Mountains, offering breathtaking views of fjords, glaciers, waterfalls, and wildlife. You won’t miss any major scenery just because you are riding the train in the return direction.

Here are some considerations for your plan:

  • Morning vs. Afternoon light: Many travelers note that the lighting can be slightly different depending on the time of day. Morning light on the way to Seward can illuminate the mountains and water beautifully, while the afternoon light returning to Anchorage also provides stunning vistas but may create different shadowing and color effects. Both times are scenic, just slightly different in feel.
  • Flexibility in Seward: Driving to Seward gives you flexibility in timing and allows you to spend the day exploring at your own pace. You can visit the harbor, Kenai Fjords National Park tours, or just enjoy local attractions before taking the train back.
  • Comfort and convenience: Avoiding an early 4:30 AM start is reasonable, especially at 86. You can rest in the morning, travel more comfortably, and still enjoy the train ride without feeling rushed or tired.

Other tips:

  • If possible, choose a window seat on the right side of the train when heading back to Anchorage; many travelers find the views along the Turnagain Arm are particularly spectacular from that side.
  • Bring a light jacket and camera/binoculars. The train can be cool and the wildlife or scenic details are often best viewed with some optical aid.
  • Consider a late morning or early afternoon departure from Seward for the return trip to maximize daylight and comfort.

In summary, taking the train back to Anchorage rather than to Seward is not a mistake. You will still experience the dramatic scenery and beauty of the route, while also enjoying a more relaxed and comfortable schedule. The return journey is scenic in its own right and often appreciated for its serene views of the Chugach Mountains and coastal landscapes.
