Maui hotel hopping
Planning Maui in 2-3 months. Searching the forum looks like my ideal is not too popular. Thoughts on 2-3 nights at a more modest hotel (Aloha Aku) in Kihei then a night in Hana. Return to Kihei to book a slightly higher end hotel for 2-3 nights. Or should I just booking 7 nights in Kihei? We are not big morning people but with the time difference from EST probably OK.
Splitting your Maui stay between Kihei and Hana can be a great way to see different parts of the island, especially if you want to experience the scenic road to Hana without rushing. That said, it does involve packing up and moving mid-trip, which can be a little inconvenient, particularly if you are traveling with luggage or want more relaxed mornings.
Here are some considerations for your plan:
- Staying 2–3 nights in Kihei at a modest hotel like Aloha Aku gives you easy access to beaches, snorkeling, and local amenities. It’s a good base for the first few days to settle in after your flight and adjust to the time difference.
- Booking a night in Hana allows you to enjoy the road to Hana without turning it into a long day trip. You can explore waterfalls, beaches, and hiking spots at a slower pace, and you’ll avoid a very early return drive.
- Returning to Kihei for 2–3 nights in a higher-end hotel gives you a chance to relax with resort-style amenities and finish your trip on a luxurious note. It also keeps you centrally located for last-minute shopping, sunset beaches, or excursions.
Alternative approach:
- If you prefer not to move hotels, consider a full Hana day trip from Kihei, leaving early in the morning. This can be long and tiring but eliminates the need to check in and out mid-trip.
- Seven nights in Kihei works well if you want to unpack once, enjoy consistent accommodations, and don’t mind the longer day for Hana. It’s simpler logistically, though the drive may feel rushed if you want to explore thoroughly.
In summary, your plan of 2–3 nights in Kihei, 1 night in Hana, then 2–3 nights back in Kihei balances experiencing both areas without feeling too rushed, especially if you are okay with adjusting to the early morning for Hana. It also maximizes your time in Hana while keeping most of your stay in a central, convenient location.
