I-70 traffic August 31

My daughter wants me to drive her to Breck tomorrow and then I have to return to Denver. Does anyone know how bad the traffic will be coming back into Denver on Sunday afternoon Labor Day weekend? I'm thinking BAD. And thinking of putting her on Bustang.

Traveling I-70 from Breckenridge back to Denver on Sunday afternoon of Labor Day weekend is notoriously busy, and your concern is well-founded. Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times in Colorado’s mountain corridor, and I-70 is the main artery connecting the mountains to Denver. Expect heavy traffic, especially from mid-afternoon into early evening.

Typical traffic patterns on this day:

  • Peak westbound traffic from the mountains often starts around noon and can last until 7–8 pm.
  • Bottlenecks frequently occur at key points, including the Eisenhower Tunnel, Floyd Hill, and the exit ramps around Idaho Springs and Georgetown.
  • Travel times from Breckenridge to Denver that normally take 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours can easily double or even triple on a busy holiday Sunday.

Tips to mitigate the traffic stress:

  • Consider Bustang or other mountain-to-Denver shuttles: These buses often use HOV lanes and have fewer stops, making them faster than driving yourself in peak traffic. Bustang is popular on weekends and holidays, and reservations can fill up, so check availability in advance.
  • Travel early or late: Leaving before 11 am or after 7 pm can significantly reduce time stuck in traffic.
  • Alternative routes: Options like Highway 119 through Boulder or taking a slightly longer scenic route via Highway 285 can help avoid the worst congestion, but expect some traffic on these roads as well.
  • Real-time traffic apps: Use Google Maps or Waze to monitor traffic; these apps can suggest minor detours that save time if accidents or severe backups occur.
  • Patience and preparation: Bring snacks, water, and entertainment if you do drive, as delays are almost guaranteed during peak hours.

Overall, putting your daughter on Bustang might be the smartest choice for her safety and sanity, while you avoid the worst of the Labor Day traffic yourself. If you must drive, aim for an early morning or later evening departure to minimize the worst delays.
