Day trip to downtown Savannah

I'll be spending a week on Tybee but would like to spend a day downtown Savannah. Is there any type of shuttle to downtown Savannah and back to Tybee, same day?

Spending a day in downtown Savannah while staying on Tybee Island is a fantastic idea, and fortunately, there are several options to make the trip easy and convenient. While there isn’t a direct shuttle service that runs regularly between Tybee Island and downtown Savannah, there are a few alternatives to help you get from one to the other with ease:

1. Tybee Island to Savannah Shuttle Service: There are some seasonal shuttle services that operate during the peak tourist seasons, including the summer months. These shuttles usually offer round-trip transportation between Tybee Island and downtown Savannah, making it a convenient option for day trips. Some shuttle services may operate only on specific days, so it’s best to check availability in advance. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Tybee Island Shuttle: This service offers transportation from Tybee Island to downtown Savannah. It typically runs multiple trips a day, making it ideal for a day trip to explore the historic district. You may want to check with local tour operators or your accommodation to confirm the exact schedule and availability.
  • Southern Comforts Tybee Tours: While primarily focused on tours, some operators also provide shuttle service options to downtown Savannah. These can be a great way to not only travel but also learn more about the area on your way to the city.

2. Taxi or Ride-Sharing (Uber/Lyft): If you're looking for a more flexible and private way to get to Savannah, using a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft is another good option. These services are widely available on Tybee Island and can take you directly to downtown Savannah in about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. While this option is more expensive than a shuttle, it offers more flexibility, especially if you want to leave Tybee at a specific time or return later in the evening.

  • Uber or Lyft: These ride-sharing services are generally reliable and can be booked through their respective apps. Be aware that pricing may vary depending on demand, especially during peak travel times or special events in Savannah.
• Taxi: Taxis are also available, though they may be less common than ride-sharing options. It's a good idea to ask your accommodation on Tybee Island if they can recommend a reliable local taxi service.

3. Renting a Car: If you prefer to have more control over your schedule and the ability to explore at your own pace, renting a car could be a good option. While Tybee Island has plenty of public parking, you can also find parking throughout downtown Savannah. Renting a car for the day will give you the freedom to explore Savannah and return to Tybee whenever you choose.

4. Driving Yourself (If You Have a Car): If you have access to a car during your stay on Tybee Island, driving yourself to Savannah is the most straightforward option. The drive is about 20 minutes, depending on traffic, and it’s easy to find parking near Savannah’s historic district. There are several parking garages and street parking options available, but be prepared for higher rates near popular tourist areas like River Street and Forsyth Park.

In summary, while there isn’t a dedicated shuttle that operates year-round, you do have a few good options to get from Tybee Island to downtown Savannah for a day trip. Whether you choose a shuttle, ride-sharing service, or rent a car, you’ll find it easy to explore the beautiful sights of Savannah and return to Tybee the same day.
