Entry Requirements from Australia
Hello,
I am planning to travel to the USA.
I have applied for a ESTA.
Once approved is there anything else i require apart from a current Australian Passport?
Tried ringing the US Embassy but they where not very helpful.
Thanks
Hi,
If you have already applied for and received approval for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) as an Australian citizen, you are generally allowed to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit purposes. However, there are a few additional points to keep in mind beyond having a valid Australian passport and approved ESTA:
- Valid Passport: Your Australian passport must be an e-passport (with a digital chip) and valid for the entire duration of your stay in the U.S.
- ESTA Approval: Ensure your ESTA is approved before boarding your flight. ESTA is typically valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries.
- Return or Onward Ticket: Airlines may require proof of onward travel, such as a return flight to Australia or a ticket to a third country.
- Customs Declaration: On arrival in the U.S., you will need to complete a customs declaration form (usually electronically at the airport) and may be asked questions by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer.
- Financial Means: While not usually asked, be prepared to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your stay.
Optional but recommended:
- Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, as healthcare in the U.S. can be very expensive.
- Copies of your itinerary, accommodation bookings, and contact information.
Important: Approval of an ESTA does not guarantee entry. The final decision is made by the CBP officer at the port of entry.
So, with a current valid Australian passport, an approved ESTA, and your onward/return ticket, you generally have all the required documents to enter the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program.
