Kealakekua Bay Snorkeling Big Island Hawaii Questions

Hello,

1. For Kealakekua Bay Snorkeling, is it best done via Zodiac speed boat or Hula Kai Vessel? (We are a couple in our 30's. We like to be comfortable or even feel spoiled, but also love adventure and don't like super commercialized and crowded.)

2. Is it a good idea to add in Pu’uhonua O Honaunau this day- do a tour that stops in both places- or best to do this on a separate day?

3. I have read Kealakekua Bay has the best snorkeling, but wondering if anyone else prefers a different spot? We are open to suggestions.

Thank you

Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life. It’s also a place of historical and cultural significance, being the site where Captain Cook first landed and the location of a sacred Hawaiian heiau. Your questions touch on logistics, comfort, and maximizing the experience.

1. Zodiac vs. Hula Kai Vessel for snorkeling

  • Zodiac Speed Boat — Offers a more adventurous and intimate experience. The smaller size allows for more flexibility, and you can often reach less crowded snorkeling spots quickly. Expect a faster ride and more exposure to sun and wind, but it’s ideal if you enjoy a bit of adrenaline and being closer to nature.
  • Hula Kai Vessel — Larger catamaran-style boat, more comfortable seating, shaded areas, and often includes food/drinks. It’s a relaxed, "spoil yourself" option with amenities for comfort. May be slightly more commercialized, with more guests onboard, but still a premium experience.

For a couple in their 30s who want comfort but also love adventure, either can work. If you lean toward comfort with a touch of luxury, Hula Kai is better. If you want a thrilling ride with fewer people, Zodiac is ideal.

2. Adding Pu’uhonua O Honaunau

  • The Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park is about a 10–15 minute drive from Kealakekua Bay. While possible to combine the two in one day, it depends on how much time you want for snorkeling. Snorkeling can take several hours, especially if you want to explore the marine life leisurely.
  • If you prefer a relaxed day without rushing, consider doing Pu’uhonua O Honaunau on a separate day. This allows time to fully enjoy both experiences — cultural exploration and water adventure.

3. Other snorkeling spots on the Big Island

  • Honaunau Bay (adjacent to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau) — Excellent snorkeling with calmer waters; good for a more relaxed experience if you want to avoid crowds.
  • Two Step (Honaunau/Kealakekua area) — Famous snorkeling entry with rich marine life; a bit easier to access from shore.
  • Kahalu’u Beach Park (Kona) — Convenient for families and beginners, with shallow waters and abundant tropical fish. More commercialized, but accessible.
  • Mauna Kea Beach (North Kohala) — Beautiful sandy beach with clear waters; can be crowded on weekends.

Overall, Kealakekua Bay is considered one of the best spots for snorkeling due to its diversity of fish, clarity, and scenic backdrop. Combining a day there with Pu’uhonua O Honaunau is feasible if you start early, but splitting them into two days allows a more relaxed pace.
