scenic route to Foley

It has been about 4 years since we went from Perdido Key into Foley AL via a scenic route that did not involve beach express or any highways

It went through a very pretty water section where there was a place you could stop and have a picnic and I remember a big marina on the opposite side of the water also then you continue on into Foley

Can anyone PLEASE help me out here as we would like to do the drive this year when we come in March

For a scenic drive from Perdido Key to Foley, AL that avoids highways and the Beach Express, the route you remember is likely along the back roads that follow the waterways near the Perdido Bay and Bon Secour Bay areas. This route is very picturesque, with opportunities to stop for a picnic and see marinas along the way.

Here’s a suggested route that closely matches your description:

  • Start from Perdido Key and take Perdido Key Drive (County Road 292) eastward.
  • Turn north onto Johnson Beach Road to enjoy the waterside views and the picnic areas in Gulf Islands National Seashore, if open.
  • Continue onto County Road 182 (Perdido Beach Boulevard) and cross over the Intracoastal Waterway for views of marinas and waterfront properties.
  • Follow CR 182 into the Fairhope/Foley area via CR 1 or CR 12, which leads into Foley, passing scenic farmland and small bayside communities.

Along this drive, you can find several nice stopping points for a picnic or short break, including:

  • Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge – picnic areas and walking trails.
  • Marinas near the Intracoastal Waterway along CR 182 – plenty of scenic water views and boat activity.
  • Little parks and pull-offs along the water channels just before entering Foley, perfect for a short scenic stop.

This route avoids major highways, provides waterfront scenery, and gives you the relaxing drive you are looking for. Leaving early in the day is recommended, especially if you want to stop along the way and enjoy a picnic without rush.
