For an oceanfront or oceanview stay in Kauai in January, there are several great options depending on the atmosphere you're looking for and the amenities you prefer. Considering your budget of around $800 per night, there are a number of upscale hotels and condos that should fit the bill for a wonderful experience in Kauai. Here are some suggestions:

1. Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa (Poipu)

This resort is one of the most luxurious options on Kauai, located on the sunny south shore in Poipu. It offers both oceanfront and garden view rooms. The property has stunning beachfront views, multiple pools, a lazy river, and a beautiful spa. The Grand Hyatt is perfect if you're looking for a resort with upscale amenities, excellent dining, and direct beach access. You can often find rooms under $800 per night during January, but prices can vary depending on the room type and availability.

2. Koa Kea Hotel & Resort (Poipu)

Located right on Poipu Beach, Koa Kea is a smaller, boutique hotel known for its excellent oceanfront views and quieter, more intimate atmosphere. It offers a laid-back luxury experience with just over 100 rooms. It’s perfect if you want a more intimate, peaceful setting with fantastic dining options and great service. Rooms here can sometimes fall within your budget depending on the time of booking and room type.

3. Sheraton Kauai Resort (Poipu)

Located on a beautiful stretch of Poipu Beach, the Sheraton Kauai offers both oceanfront and oceanview rooms. The property has been recently renovated, with a modern tropical feel and direct beach access. The pool area is wonderful, and the resort is known for its friendly service. It’s a good choice if you want a more relaxed hotel atmosphere but still with upscale amenities. Rates can often be found below $800 a night in January.

4. The St. Regis Princeville (North Shore) (now called Princeville Resort)

If you’re open to staying on the North Shore, The St. Regis (now Princeville Resort) offers breathtaking ocean views overlooking Hanalei Bay. This is one of the most upscale options on the island, with luxurious rooms, impeccable service, and one of the most beautiful locations in Kauai. Prices can vary, but deals under $800 a night can sometimes be found during the off-peak season or with promotions. The North Shore offers a slightly quieter and more scenic atmosphere compared to Poipu.

5. The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas (North Shore)

If you’re open to condos but still want a high-end resort experience, The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas might be a good option. Located on the beautiful North Shore, it offers spacious, well-appointed villas with partial or full ocean views. This is a great option if you prefer a more home-like atmosphere with kitchen facilities while still having access to resort amenities such as pools and spas. The villas offer great flexibility for families or couples, and prices can be in your budget range depending on the time of booking.

6. Hanalei Bay Resort (North Shore)

Also located on the North Shore, Hanalei Bay Resort is a more relaxed and less expensive option compared to the Princeville Resort. The property offers oceanview condos and rooms, and it’s perched above the famous Hanalei Bay, offering great views and easy access to the beach. While not as luxurious as the St. Regis, it’s a great option if you want to be close to the water, with access to pools, tennis courts, and a great location. Rates are often more affordable here, and you can get rooms with ocean views within your price range.

7. Waimea Plantation Cottages (Waimea)

If you’re looking for something unique and not a traditional hotel or resort, the Waimea Plantation Cottages offers a more relaxed experience in a historic setting. The property is located on the west side of the island, with views of the ocean and sunsets. The cottages are fully equipped with kitchens and offer a charming atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. While not directly on the beach, you’ll still have good ocean access, and the property has a private, tranquil feel. Rates here can be very reasonable for the quality of accommodation and views.

8. Aqua Kauai Beach Resort (Lihue)

Located near Lihue, Aqua Kauai Beach Resort offers a mix of oceanfront and oceanview rooms with beautiful views of the Pacific. The resort has a relaxing vibe and offers a variety of amenities, including pools, a spa, and dining options. It's also a short drive from Lihue Airport and close to the eastern side of the island, which is a convenient location for exploring the entire island. The rates are often more affordable compared to the more luxury-focused resorts on the island, and you can typically find rooms under $800 during January.

In general, Poipu and the North Shore (Princeville area) offer the most oceanfront options, with Poipu being the more popular and sunnier area, while the North Shore provides stunning views and a more laid-back atmosphere. For snorkeling, Poipu Beach and the waters near Hanalei Bay (North Shore) are great spots. If you’re looking for luxury and an oceanfront stay, Koa Kea and the Grand Hyatt are top choices, while the Westin Princeville offers more of a condo-resort option.

I hope this helps narrow down your options! Enjoy your stay in Kauai!
