Accommodation over St Patrick’s Day March 17th

Hello all - really struggling to find a nice place to stay for a couple of nights around St Pats Day and would welcome any suggestions. As we only have 2 nights in the area we don’t want to be too far away from the Historic District and whilst we have a car we don’t really want to use it.

The central district hotels are very expensive but I guess this is a very busy time.

Any help much appreciated

St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah is an incredibly busy time with celebrations, parades, and lots of tourists, so finding affordable accommodation close to the Historic District can be tricky. However, there are a few strategies you can use to find a good place to stay without having to drive much or break the bank. Here are some suggestions:

Consider staying just outside the Historic District:

  • Stay in nearby neighborhoods: If you don’t mind being slightly outside the Historic District, you might be able to find more affordable options in areas like Victorian District, the Starland District, or midtown Savannah. These neighborhoods are still close to the action, and you can easily use public transport, Uber, or a short drive to get to the Historic District.
  • The Yates Apartment: If you’re looking for something more private and a bit more affordable, consider checking out short-term apartment rentals in nearby areas. Many properties outside the Historic District are much more affordable but still offer quick access to downtown via Uber or public transit.
  • Airbnb or VRBO options: Look for vacation rentals in and around the Historic District. While many hotels will be pricey, you may find some charming Airbnb or VRBO apartments or houses in quieter neighborhoods that still give you easy access to the heart of the festivities.

Hotels Outside the Immediate District but Close Enough:

  • The Hyatt Regency Savannah: This is a mid-range hotel located on the riverfront, just a short walk from the Historic District. While it might be a bit more expensive than normal due to the time of year, it’s worth checking for deals. It's close to the action but on the edge of the Historic District, so it may be slightly more affordable than central options.
  • The Thunderbird Inn: Located just outside the main Historic District, this retro-inspired hotel is often one of the more affordable choices in the area. It’s a short drive or walk to the downtown festivities, and the quirky décor makes it a fun option.
  • Hampton Inn Savannah Historic District: This hotel is a little more budget-friendly and offers easy access to downtown. While not right in the thick of things, it’s just a short walk or quick ride from the main attractions and St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

Book early and use booking platforms:

Since St. Patrick’s Day is such a busy time, booking as early as possible is key. You may also want to check booking platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, or Hotels.com for deals and special offers, which may help you find a hotel at a better rate than what’s listed on the hotel’s direct website.

Other Tips:

  • Parking Considerations: Many of the central hotels charge for parking, so if you’re not planning on using your car, consider parking in a public lot or garage for the duration of your stay to avoid unnecessary fees.
  • Public Transit: Consider using Savannah’s free DOT shuttle service. It covers the Historic District and offers easy access to restaurants, bars, and other key areas of the city. You can leave your car parked at the hotel and use the shuttle for transportation to and from the festivities.
  • Uber/Lyft: If you stay slightly outside the Historic District, using Uber or Lyft is a good option. It’s relatively affordable, and with demand high during St. Patrick's Day, there will be plenty of drivers available.

In conclusion: Given the crowds and higher prices around St. Patrick’s Day, consider looking just outside the Historic District for a more affordable stay. With easy access to the festivities via Uber, Lyft, or public transit, staying a little further out can provide a quieter, more relaxing environment and often better value for money. Start your search early to find the best deals, and don't forget to check out alternatives like short-term rentals. Good luck, and enjoy your trip to Savannah!
