Finally have the nice trip on Coast Starlight. From Seattle to San Francisco.
Not much delay. Only may be 10 minutes ? I don't even realise.
However, I have a query.
I am on Car 31. Car 30 to Car 32 are all sleeping cars. All have roomette and private rooms. But they are very different.
Car 31 and 32 are simple and looked outdated. Floor is carpet. Wall are grey color.
The restrooms and wash rooms are small.
Car 30 looks new. The floor is wood, I think. The wall are brown color, like wood. so look elegant.
Both restrooms and wash room are bigger and cleaner.
Car 30 looks like what is in YT. Car 31 and 32 are definitely not the same.
I think my room is assigned, not chosen.
Anyway. overall it is a nice journey. I enjoy the room all to myself.
It is nice to meet other passenger in dining room. The observation deck is good.
I will try again on other route.
It sounds like you had a wonderful Coast Starlight experience from Seattle to San Francisco. The train is known for its scenic views, comfortable accommodations, and opportunities to meet fellow passengers in the dining and observation cars. Your observation about the differences between cars 30, 31, and 32 is accurate and common on this route.
Amtrak’s Coast Starlight has several sleeping cars, and not all are the same. Car 30, which you described as looking new with wood-colored walls and larger restrooms, is one of the renovated Superliner sleeping cars. These typically feature updated interiors, more spacious and cleaner restrooms, and an overall modern aesthetic. Cars 31 and 32, which are older and have grey carpeting and smaller restrooms, are older Superliner sleeping cars. They are still fully functional but may feel outdated compared to the renovated cars.
Key points about the differences:
Regarding room assignment, Amtrak typically assigns rooms automatically based on availability and ticket type. Passengers rarely choose a specific car or roomette unless they book certain premium accommodations far in advance. This explains why your room was in Car 31 rather than the newly renovated Car 30.
Other tips for future Coast Starlight trips:
Overall, even with some older cars, the Coast Starlight remains a scenic and comfortable journey. Many passengers enjoy the unique charm of both old and renovated cars. You’ll likely enjoy trying another route or a different car next time to compare the experience.
