Government Shutdown
Anyone been to Pinnacles within the past week? What is open and what is closed? Family of four flying in from Pennsylvania mid next week and planned to do a long day trip detour to Pinnacles between the San Fran- Kings Canyon drive. We planned to enter the East Entrance only. Any updates before we make the drive? The NP website is extremely vague and I can't seem to find much online. Any help would be appreciated!
Visiting Pinnacles National Park during a government shutdown can be unpredictable, as access and services may be limited. Here’s what you can generally expect, based on past shutdown patterns and reports from visitors:
Park access:
- The East Entrance (near Paicines) is typically open for vehicle entry during a partial shutdown, but this is subject to change. Check for posted signs at the entrance.
- Parking lots may be accessible, but some may be closed or have limited capacity.
Facilities and services:
- Visitor centers are usually closed, so there will be no rangers, information, or maps available. Restrooms at visitor centers may also be closed.
- Trails remain physically accessible, but maintenance and safety monitoring may be minimal or nonexistent.
- Water fountains, picnic areas, and trash collection may not be operational. Bring your own water, snacks, and trash bags.
Hiking and safety considerations:
- Popular trails like High Peaks or Balconies Cave may be open, but trail closures or hazards may not be marked.
- Cell service is limited in the park, so plan your navigation and emergency contacts in advance.
- Since rangers may not be present, follow Leave No Trace principles and take extra care on uneven or rocky trails.
Planning tips for a family visit:
- Arrive early to maximize daylight, especially if some facilities are closed.
- Bring plenty of water, food, and any equipment you may need for a long hike or picnic.
- Check local news or the official National Park Service social media accounts for real-time updates on closures or access changes.
In summary, you can likely still enter Pinnacles from the East Entrance and access the trails, but visitor services, restrooms, and rangers will be limited. Prepare accordingly for a self-sufficient day trip and monitor updates before your travel.
