November drive to Yosemite from Death Valley ?
We are planning a trip to Death Valley for a few days in November & were thinking of driving to Yosemite. We are wondering if this is feasible or are some roads closed because of storms? Thanks for any suggestions.
Driving from Death Valley to Yosemite in November can be a beautiful journey, but there are several factors to consider, primarily related to weather and road closures. November is late autumn in California, and higher elevation roads in and around Yosemite can start seeing snow and ice.
Here are the main considerations:
- Most low-elevation routes from Death Valley to Yosemite, such as via Lone Pine and Highway 395, are generally open year-round. This is the most common route for visitors in late fall.
- High-elevation passes, particularly Tioga Pass (Highway 120 through the park), often close in late October or November due to snow. If your plan involves entering Yosemite via Tioga Pass, it is likely closed in November.
- Check for potential chain requirements if traveling in snowy conditions. While lower elevations are usually fine, weather can change quickly.
Recommended approach:
- Plan your route along Highway 395 and access Yosemite via the Big Oak Flat Entrance (Highway 120 west) or the South Entrance via Highway 41 from Fresno, which remains open year-round.
- Monitor current road conditions on the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) website and the official Yosemite National Park road status page before you depart.
- Allow extra travel time; weather or road conditions may slow your drive, and some scenic stops may be less accessible if there is snow or early winter closures.
Overall, a November drive from Death Valley to Yosemite is feasible, but avoid planning to use Tioga Pass, and always check road conditions before leaving to ensure a safe trip.
