Taxi from Airport to Hopewell Hotel

Hi,

I did a quick search on google, it costs $ 45USD from airport to Hopewell Hotel. Does this sound accurate? It sounds very reasonable for 4 people. Is there an apps of HKG taxi where I can check to see how much it costs? Also, please recommend any other solution of transport from airport to hotel, I checked the airport bus and there is not one nearby the hotel for drop off and we have luggage, we don't mind the walk but worry about the rain since we are traveling during the raining season.

Thank you,

Tibby

Hi Tibby,

Yes, a taxi fare of around USD 45 from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to Hopewell Hotel sounds reasonable for 4 passengers. Taxis in Hong Kong charge based on a combination of distance and time, and there may be additional surcharges such as airport pickup fees, luggage fees, and tolls for the bridges or tunnels.

Here are some details and alternatives for your transfer:

  • Taxi: Hong Kong taxis are color-coded: red taxis serve most of Hong Kong, including Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, while green and blue taxis serve the New Territories and Lantau Island. Hopewell Hotel is located in Wan Chai / Causeway Bay area on Hong Kong Island, so a red taxi is appropriate. You can pay in HKD (cash) or sometimes via contactless payment.
  • Taxi Fare Apps: While there isn’t an official Hong Kong taxi app for fare estimation, you can use Google Maps to check distance and estimated taxi fares. Another popular app is HKTaxi, which allows you to book taxis in advance and see approximate fares.
  • Alternative Options:
    • Airport Express + MTR: Take the Airport Express train to Hong Kong Station (about 24 minutes), then transfer to the MTR or a short taxi ride to the hotel. This is fast but may be inconvenient with multiple bags and kids.
    • Ride-hailing services: Apps like Uber operate in Hong Kong and can provide upfront fare estimates. This may be slightly more expensive than a regular taxi but is convenient if you want cashless payment.
    • Private Transfer: Some hotels offer private airport pickup for a fixed rate. This can be convenient during the rainy season and with luggage, although it is generally more expensive than a taxi.

Given that you have 4 people and luggage, a standard red taxi is likely the most convenient and cost-effective solution. Make sure to check for tolls (e.g., Cross-Harbour Tunnel) that may slightly increase the fare. Always have HKD in cash, as not all taxis accept cards.

Overall, USD 45 seems reasonable, especially with rain and luggage to consider. The taxi ride from the airport to Wan Chai typically takes 30–40 minutes outside peak traffic hours.
