What other activities would you recommend?
Going in March for Spring Break. We will be in Heavenly by 9am. Hotel check-in is not until 4:00. What do you recommend to fill the time other than shopping?
March is a great time to be in South Lake Tahoe—still plenty of snow, but also longer days and lots to do before your hotel check-in. Since you'll arrive at Heavenly around 9am, you’ll have several hours to enjoy the area without needing to rely on shopping.
Below are detailed, practical options to help you make the most of your time:
- Ride the Heavenly Gondola (even if you aren’t skiing) – The gondola is one of the best ways to kick off your day. The mid-station observation deck offers an incredible panoramic view over Lake Tahoe. You can spend 1–2 hours enjoying the scenery, taking photos, and even grabbing a snack at the top.
- Go Snowshoeing or Cross-Country Skiing – If you want an active way to enjoy the fresh snow, head to Van Sickle Bi-State Park (walkable from Heavenly Village) or drive a short distance to Kahle Park or Camp Richardson. Snowshoe rentals are easy to find and you don’t need much experience — perfect for a half-day activity.
- Walk the South Lake Tahoe Beach Areas – If the weather is nice, take a stroll at Lakeside Beach, Timber Cove, or Nevada Beach. Even with snow around, the shoreline walks are beautiful, quiet, and a refreshing contrast to the mountain environment.
- Grab a Leisurely Brunch or Coffee – South Lake Tahoe has plenty of cozy cafés. A slow breakfast can help you pass time comfortably, especially if you're adjusting from travel. Look for spots near Heavenly Village so you can transition easily to your next activity.
- Try the Heavenly Village Activities – Without focusing on shopping, you can still enjoy things like the mini golf (seasonally open), ice skating (often open in winter/spring), or arcade options. These can fill an hour or two without requiring a big commitment.
- Visit the Tahoe Environmental Research Center – If you’d like something more educational or low-key, this center in Incline Village offers exhibits on Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem. It’s about a 35-minute drive but can be done easily before check-in.
- Relax at a Lakeside Bar or Brewery – If you're with adults, this can be a great way to unwind after traveling. Many places have fire pits and outdoor seating with lake views — wonderful in crisp March weather.
- Drive Scenic Routes – If the roads are clear, consider a short scenic drive along Highway 89 toward Emerald Bay. Even if you don’t do the full loop, there are several safe pullouts for pictures or walks. Just check road conditions that morning.
Overall, you’ll have plenty of options to enjoy Tahoe even without shopping or having access to your hotel room yet. Whether you want something active, scenic, or relaxing, everything is close by and easy to fit into a few hours.
