Whale watch timing

Would it be better to do a whale watch March 5 from Oahu or wait until March 11 while on Maui? Starting to worry that March 11 will be too late in the season. Thanks

Humpback whale season in Hawaii typically runs from mid-December through late April, with peak sightings usually between January and March. By early March, whale activity is still high, though there can be some variation depending on weather and migration patterns.

Timing Considerations:

  • Oahu – March 5: Whale sightings off Oahu, especially from the leeward side near Waikiki, Turtle Bay, and Kaena Point, are very likely. Tours at this time are still within peak season, so you can expect good chances to see whales, including breaching and tail-slapping behaviors.
  • Maui – March 11: Maui is generally considered the best island for whale watching, particularly around Lahaina, Maalaea, and Kihei. By March 11, whales are still plentiful, though sightings can be slightly less frequent than in late January or early February. That said, Maui’s waters are calmer and shallower near the coast, which often makes for excellent close-up viewing.

Recommendation:

If you want the absolute highest probability of seeing whales and possibly more active behavior, the March 5 Oahu trip is slightly safer. However, if you prefer Maui’s world-class whale-watching tours, which often allow for very close encounters and knowledgeable guides, March 11 is still well within the season and should provide an excellent experience.

Ultimately, either date works, but your choice depends on whether you prioritize timing (earlier in March) or location/tour quality (Maui).
