Nestled at the foot of the majestic Tian Shan mountains, Almaty is a city of wild nature, Soviet history, and warm Kazakh hospitality. As a first-time solo traveler here, I found it safe, affordable, and thrillingly different—a perfect blend of urban energy and outdoor adventure.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Day 1 – Green Boulevards & Soviet Icons: Strolled through Panfilov Park, home to the dazzling Zenkov Cathedral—a pastel-colored wooden church built without nails. Paid my respects at the Memorial of Glory and explored the Green Bazaar for spices, dried fruits, and fermented horse milk (kumis)—for the brave!
· Day 2 – Mountain Escape & Kok Tobe: Took a bus to the Medeu Skating Rink and the Shymbulak Ski Resort, hiking through wildflower meadows with jaw-dropping views. In the evening, I rode the cable car up Kok Tobe Hill for sunset views over the city and the iconic Beatles Monument.
· Day 3 – Culture & Cafés: Visited the Central State Museum to dive into Kazakh history and nomadic culture. Spent the afternoon in cozy coffee shops in the city center—Almaty’s café scene is surprisingly trendy!
Top Tips for Solo Travelers:
· Use Yandex Taxi: Cheap and reliable rides across the city.
· Learn a Few Phrases: Russian or basic Kazakh greetings like Salam (hello) and Rakhmet (thank you) are appreciated.
· Try the Food: Don’t leave without tasting beshbarmak (meat and noodles), plov (rice pilaf), and Almaty’s famous apples.
· Day Trips are a Must: Use shared taxis or buses to visit the Charyn Canyon or Big Almaty Lake for epic nature.
Almaty is raw, real, and ridiculously scenic—a gateway to adventure and culture few travelers know about… yet.
