Aomori: Unlock the magic of Tohoku, Japan

We visited Mt. Hakkoda early in the winter season, and although the snow hadn’t reached full depth yet, the views were already stunning. The mountain landscape stretched out beautifully around us, with a quiet charm that made the whole experience feel serene and special.
It was fascinating to catch a glimpse of the early formations of the snow monsters (Juhyo) — the famous frost-covered trees this area is known for. While they weren’t in their full glory yet, it was still exciting to witness their beginnings and imagine how spectacular they would become later in the season.
One of the best parts was how peaceful it was. The crowds hadn’t arrived, and we felt like we had the mountain almost to ourselves. That sense of space, paired with the crisp air and mountain views, made this a truly memorable stop on our Tohoku journey.
