Buphaya Paya

This is possibly one of the oldest temples in Bagan, built right next to the riverbank. There is a white fortress, and this pear-shaped pagoda is on top of the fortress.

Like other Bagan pagodas, it is usually crowded. There are lots of shops, and a busy market right outside. One needs to keep the shoes out before entering.

There are steps on the side of this pagoda that lead down to the river, from where one can hail a boat.

It has a very unique shape in the form of a pear and is golden in color, making it perfect for taking pictures. There are a few small temples and shrines around the main structure, where one can sit and meditate or chant the Buddhist suttas.
