"The Mansion of Plates - คฤหาสน์จาน"

"The Mansion of Plates": A Reinterpretation of the Legend of a Strong Woman Through the Eyes of Pop Culture and Anime by Artist Yuree Kensaku

This exhibition reflects the power and struggle of women through an exploration of women's narratives in culture and history. Inspired by folklore, pop culture, and societal archetypes that have shaped women's roles throughout history, the artist delves into ancient tales, questions power structures, and reveals the complexities of female identity through contemporary reinterpretations.

The artist recognizes that women are often framed as beautiful and vulnerable, but this exhibition highlights their strength and perseverance through the creation of characters inspired by ghosts, demons, and antiheroes, transforming them into symbols of defiance and the call for justice.

"The Mansion of Plates" depicts female characters from diverse cultures, such as Okiku from Japanese mythology, Medusa from Greek mythology, and Mae Nak Phra Khanong from Thailand, as well as contemporary icons like Lisa from Blackpink and Sailor Moon. The artist selects characters that reflect oppression, struggle, and the creation of new identities, while also breaking stereotypes and creating new understandings of women's power and role in society.

The narrative in this exhibition combines a critical exploration of the social constructs that define femininity, encouraging viewers to question the roles women have played in both past and present narratives. Through her unique artistic style, her work reflects the playfulness of pop art, incorporating elements from anime, creating vibrant characters steeped in symbolism that conveys the complexities of female roles in society. These elements connect with contemporary culture, such as pixelated plates, the use of vibrant, retro colors, and compositions that convey the characters' journeys through fantasy and reality.

While these works are refreshingly vibrant and lively, a deeper look into the stories behind each piece reveals the thought-provoking message that women are not defined by their past or societal frameworks, but rather by their own identities and meanings. This encourages viewers to consider how we can overcome stereotypes and create an equitable society.
