When bananas become ghosts

When bananas become ghosts and laughter becomes a mirror of prejudice, "BANANA GHOST" is an exhibition that reflects the biting humor and unapologetic tropical fantasy of Tintin Cooper.
Growing up in a multicultural family, the artist's father worked with refugees and studied Asian minorities, leading her to live in countries ranging from Chiang Kham, Phuket, Vientiane, to France and Indonesia. These experiences of migration shaped her perception of "parallel worlds" of cultural interpretations from both inside and outside, which form the core of "BANANA GHOST."
The exhibition presents a world that is simultaneously humorous and bittersweet. The artist uses memes, humor, and tropical fantasy as tools to delve into the prejudices, inequalities, and politics of how Thailand and Southeast Asia are imagined and consumed through the eyes of outsiders.
The artist uses vibrant colors and semi-cartoonish characters to create a fantasy world brimming with humor and contradiction. She blends symbols from both Western and Eastern cultures and draws inspiration from contemporary online culture, from animal memes to TikTok videos of international tourists to Thai news headlines. and the phenomenon of "passport bros" that reflects on travel, the pursuit of happiness, and the imbalance of power in a post-colonial world.
Each piece in "BANANA GHOST" acts as a two-way mirror and a dialogue about the power of seeing, interpreting, and being othered in a world that is constantly going viral.
