The Castle of Berat, or Kalaja e Beratit, is a historic fortress overlooking the city of Berat, Albania. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress has roots dating back to the 4th century BCE, but most of its current walls and structures are from the 13th century. Uniquely, the castle is not a ruin but a living community, with residents still living within its ancient walls.
