The Arriaga Theatre is one of the most important buildings in Bilbao

Spain's Atlantic Coast Pilgrimage ~ Basque Country
Inspired by the Paris Opera, the theater was completed in 1890 and designed by architect Joaquín Rucoba. The building is named after the Bilbao-born composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, whose bust stands on the Royal Staircase. The theater's facade is in eclectic style and features a spacious balcony.
The theater has survived various disasters throughout its history. After a severe fire, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1919. In the 1980s, the theater underwent a comprehensive restoration and reopened in 1986. Its interior still features antique furniture and carpets from the Royal Tapestry Factory. The theater offers a variety of artistic activities year-round, including theater performances, opera, ballet, concerts, and cultural events.
