Bilbao Abando Train Station: A Must-Visit Spot for Stunning Stained Glass

Embark on a pilgrimage along Spain's Atlantic coast in the Basque region! The Abando Indalecio Prieto Train Station, also known as Bilbao Abando or traditionally referred to as the North Train Station, is the main railway hub in Bilbao. Located in the city center, specifically in the Abando district at the intersection of Circular Plaza, Gran Vía, and Hurtado de Amézaga Street, this station is a masterpiece of classical architecture. Designed by Alfonso Fungairiño, the current station was inaugurated in 1948, replacing the original station built in 1863 at the same site.

One of the station's most striking features is its large stained glass window, created by the Irún Glass Artists' Union. This iconic artwork has become a symbol of the city and is a must-see for visitors.

As a central station, it serves long-distance express trains to and from Bilbao, including Alvia and IC intercity services connecting Bilbao with major cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Additionally, it offers commuter train services, enhancing its functionality.

Thanks to its strategic location, the station and its surroundings have evolved into a de facto multimodal transport hub over the years, connecting various modes of transportation, including the metro. Today, it stands as one of the most important transfer points in the Bilbao province railway network, alongside San Mamés and the Old Town railway stations. The station is seamlessly linked to Bilbao Metro Lines 1 and 2, the city tram, and numerous urban and provincial bus stops in the surrounding streets.
