Xinjiang Travel Tips: Why You Shouldn't Visit in January or February

Located about 24 km from Burqin County in northern Xinjiang, Five-Colored Beach (Wucaitan) is one of China’s most stunning Yadan (wind-eroded) landforms.
This surreal landscape gets its name from its vividly layered rocks — shades of red, yellow, green, purple, and black formed by different mineral deposits and years of wind erosion. When the sunlight hits, the colors shift and glow, creating a truly dreamlike scene.
Across the Irtysh River, you’ll find a lush green forest — forming the famous contrast of “colorful rocks on one side, greenery on the other.”
📷 Best Photography Tips
• Best time: Around sunset, when the rocks appear most vibrant.
• Best angle: From the main viewing platform overlooking the Irtysh River — you can capture the colorful hills, the river, and the trees together.
• Pro tip: Use a wide-angle lens or drone to show the vastness. The backlight of the setting sun makes the colors pop even more.
🚗 How to Get There
• About a 30-minute drive from Burqin County.
• Often visited before exploring Kanas lake
Burqin (overnight) → Five-Colored Beach for sunset→Kanas lake
💡 Travel Tips
• Bring a jacket — it gets chilly after sunset.
• Wear non-slip shoes for walking on the boardwalk.
• Avoid noon hours if you want richer colors in photos.
