Haeundae's glamour is certainly appealing, but the true heart of Busan lies in a single bowl found at a traditional market. Sitting at a small snack shop on the corner of the market, I ordered tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) and fish cakes. The owner, smilingly, asked, "Spicy?" and prepared them right in front of me. The chewy wheat rice cakes, the sweet and tangy sauce filling my mouth, and the steaming fish cake soup were more heartwarming than any Michelin-starred dish.
Just as I was starting to feel a little full from the snacks, I noticed the cod soup simmering next door. The white flesh of the cod was falling off the pot, the refreshing aroma of ginger and green onions wafting through the air. With a spoonful, I realized, "Ah, this is Busan!" The spicy yet clear broth warmed my body and soothed my soul.
This meal, not at a flashy tourist attraction, but in a market filled with the scent of life. That simple flavor and warmth remain the most vivid memories of my Busan trip.
