The center of faith of the Shan people in Chiang Mai

#VisitChiangMai
🏘Wat Ku Tao was built in 1613 to enshrine the remains of King Naratha Meng So, the first Burmese ruler of Lanna.
🛕This temple is known for its distinctive Yunnan-style pagoda. Today, Wat Ku Tao serves as a center of worship for the Shan people of Chiang Mai.
Highlights of the temple include:
🏠 The two-story viharn (ordination hall) is similar to a typical Lanna viharn (ordination hall) used for religious activities, with a naga staircase leading to the second level. The interior is decorated in Burmese style and houses the principal Buddha image, also Burmese in style, named Phra Chao Rakhang Maha Mang Mee Sap.
🛕The Ku Tao pagoda is unique among Lanna pagodas in that it is a five-tiered circular structure, symbolizing the five Buddhas.
🛕Each level of the pagoda features niches enshrining Buddha images in various postures on four sides, decorated with stained glass. It is shaped like a small flower, likely created after the restoration during the reign of King Rama V. It is decorated with colored tiles from cups and bowls. The top of the chedi is a small golden chedi, decorated with an umbrella at the top, a style resembling Burmese art.
🧱 Surrounding the chedi is a glass wall, and each side has niches housing Burmese-style Buddha images.
