Come worship the Inthakhil Pillar
The navel of the city (City Pillar)
Located in Chiang Mai
The center of the Lanna Kingdom
Located in front of Wat Chedi Luang
● The Inthakhil Pillar is
the center of the Lanna Kingdom.
Legend is that this Inthakhil Pillar
has brought happiness
and prosperity to Wiang Nop Buri,
which belonged to the Lawa people.
It became famous far and wide, leading other cities
to raise their armies to share.
The Lawa people were shocked and
asked a hermit to report the news
to Indra.
Indra then gave them two giants, or ogres.
● The giants
are very powerful and inspired
their enemies to transform into merchants
who came to ask for treasure.
The Lawa people advised merchants
to observe the precepts and keep their promises
and not be greedy
and to grant whatever they wished. Some merchants followed suit, some didn't, and some were greedy. This angered the two kumbhandas (spirits) guarding the Inthakhil pillar, who carried it back to heaven.
● Later, during the reign of King Kawila,
he commissioned the construction of statues of kumbhandas (spirits) and sages (hermits) alongside the Inthakhil pillar, as symbols.
This is now the tradition of worshipping the Inthakhil pillar (worshiping the Chiang Mai City Pillar).
