A temple that is a symbol of Chiang Rai Province's historical significance, Wat Phra Kaew is located on Trairat Road in the heart of Chiang Rai.
It was at this temple that the Emerald Buddha, or Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakorn, was discovered, currently enshrined at Wat Sri Rattana Satsadaram (Wat Phra Kaew) in Bangkok. According to history, in 1354, during the reign of King Sam Fang Kaen, a lightning strike struck an abandoned chedi and uncovered a lacquered, gilded Buddha image inside. It was later discovered to be a green jade Buddha image, hence the name, the Emerald Buddha. Today, Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai houses the newly constructed Jade Buddha image.
In addition to admiring the magnificent replica of the Emerald Buddha, the museum also houses a collection of Buddha images and priceless antiques, including ancient Buddha images from the Chiang Saen period and rare artifacts.
