Imagine climbing golden sand dunes where every step sinks softly underfoot… and then turning around to see a crystal-clear crescent-shaped oasis nestled at the foot of the desert. That’s exactly what greeted me at Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Spring in Dunhuang, Gansu.
🌕 Why It’s Magical:
• Mingsha (Singing Sands) Mountain lives up to its name — the dunes literally “sing” when the wind sweeps over them!
• Crescent Spring (月牙泉) has existed for over 2,000 years, never drying up despite being surrounded by desert.
• You get this surreal contrast of endless dunes and a hidden oasis, like stepping into a fantasy movie.
🐫 What You Can Do:
• Ride camels across the dunes 🐪 (touristy but still fun!)
• Try sandboarding or hike up to the panoramic viewpoint
• Visit during sunset or sunrise for breathtaking golden hues
• Explore the small pagoda and tea house by the spring for peaceful moments
☀️ Tips:
• Summer is scorching, so wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
• Bring a scarf or mask to avoid swallowing sand on windy days
• You can rent sand gaiters or “desert shoes” at the entrance
• Entrance fee includes shuttle and optional camel rides (extra)
📍Located just a short drive from Dunhuang city, this place is a must-visit on the Silk Road trail.
