Float Like You’re on the Moon – Laguna Cejar’s Salty Surprise

If you’ve ever dreamed of floating effortlessly like in the Dead Sea, you don’t need to travel that far — just head to Laguna Cejar, located about 20 km from San Pedro de Atacama. This stunning turquoise lagoon, set against the backdrop of the Andes and surrounded by a stark salt crust, is one of the most unique experiences in the Atacama Desert. The high salt concentration allows you to float with zero effort, and it truly feels like you’re suspended in space.
I recommend arriving mid-morning when the water is warm and the lighting is perfect for photos. Don’t forget to bring water shoes — the salt crystals along the edge can be sharp. Also, rinse off thoroughly at the provided showers after swimming, as the salt dries quickly and can be irritating to the skin.
This spot is also great for watching flamingos in the nearby smaller lagoons. It’s a fantastic half-day trip that’s both relaxing and otherworldly. I highly recommend Laguna Cejar for anyone visiting San Pedro de Atacama who’s looking to combine natural beauty with a fun, floaty experience!
