Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the origins of the approximately 2,000 Sumiyoshi Shrines across Japan, boasting a history of over 1,800 years. This shrine enshrines the 'Sumiyoshi Sanjin,' who are considered the guardians of the sea, and has historically been revered by sailors and merchants. The shrine's architecture features the pure Japanese Sumiyoshi-zukuri style, exuding an ancient charm, with the main hall designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Within the shrine grounds, there is also a 'Chikaraishi' (power stone), which is said to grant strength and good fortune to those who can lift it. The shrine is surrounded by a serene garden filled with lush greenery, making it an ideal spot for travelers who enjoy a tranquil atmosphere to visit, stroll, and pray. Every spring, it is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, where the blossoms beautifully complement the traditional shrine buildings. Although Sumiyoshi Shrine is not as famous as Dazaifu Tenmangu, it is rich in historical and cultural significance, making it a worthwhile destination when visiting Fukuoka.
