Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up JR Pass at the airport, Hakata - Kushida Shrine, Hamadaya Mizuki Chicken
- Kushida Shrine: Admire the Yamakasa, the guardian deity of Hakata, famous for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Hakata Gion Yamakasa".
- Hamadaya Mizuki Chicken: Just average, the broth was a bit bland, and the chicken wasn't very tender. Next time I might try Huawei Bird, which many people recommend online.
Day 2: DACOMECCA Bakery, Dazaifu
- Dacomecca bakery had a long queue early in the morning, but the wait was only about ten minutes, and you can get your food quickly. There was also a wait for a table if you want to dine in; I got a table after ten minutes. The mentaiko baguette was a bit hard, the rest were average. I ordered an Earl Grey drink, which was very good.
- Eating ume-mochi in Dazaifu is common knowledge, right? We chose a shop away from the main street where there was no queue, and the food was made to order – it was delicious! Tenmangu Shrine is a famous tourist attraction in Fukuoka, so how could we miss absorbing its academic atmosphere?
Day 3: Yufuin, Yufu Kamameshi (rice in a pot), Croquettes, Grilled Mushrooms, B-Speak Egg, Hakata Shin-Shin Ramen
We had reserved seats on the Yufu train with our Jr Pass, so boarding was easy. The ride took a little over two hours, and the scenery along the way was beautiful!
- Arrived at Yufu Kamameshiko (a restaurant chain) and queued up immediately. Arrived at 10:45 AM and only waited 15 minutes to get in. It truly lived up to its reputation; the ground chicken and Bungo beef had a distinct charcoal flavor and were delicious. The side dishes were very appetizing, and there were many kinds of sauces. The main dishes were great with the sauces.
- Went to the super popular Yufuin Kinsho Croquette stall on Yunotsubo Street. Bought croquettes in potato and beef flavors. Delicious, perfectly fried.
- Grilled mushrooms, picked by the owner that morning, very fresh and juicy, but there was a long queue.
- On the way back, bought an egg roll at B-Speak and ate it on the Yufu train. The cream flavor was rich, the egg roll was bouncy, and very soft and cooked through.
- Shin Shin Ramen, a must-try ramen! Several branches, the main store always has a long queue, but at the Kitte branch, there was no queue at 5:30. The soup base wasn't too thick, so it wasn't greasy, and the ramen didn't taste alkaline 👍 Super delicious!
Day 4: Moji Port, Karato Market
- It happened to be the weekend, and Karato Market had a sushi event with a huge variety of sushi. The sashimi was fresh, but the local specialty, pufferfish soup, wasn't anything special.
Day 5: Early flight back to Hong Kong. Had breakfast at Fukuoka Airport and ended the trip with ramen.
🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: Hakata Forza, Tsukushi 2-Koukou
🍴 Food Recommendation: Yufuin Kamameshi (Kama-i-Shin)
📌 Useful Tips: Pick up your JR Pass at the airport and quickly go to Hakata Station to pick it up; there's no queue at the airport.
