There is no better place to learn of Peranakan cuisine than here.

This was hands down the highlight of our Penang tripâI was genuinely excited for this meal, and it absolutely delivered. Dining at Auntie Gaik Leanâs Old School Eatery felt like being invited into someoneâs home, where every dish was served with heart and heritage.
Instead of picking dishes ourselves, we entrusted Adrian (Auntie Gaik Leanâs son) to curate the meal for us. And honestly, who are we to argue with the expert? That decision paid off beautifully.
We started with lor bak and pie teeâboth were crispy, flavourful, and a perfect warm-up to the main spread. The nasi ulam was an aromatic, herby delight, while the sambal brinjal and sambal petai with prawns packed just the right punch. The curry chicken was rich and comforting, and the assam stingrayâoh wowâbursting with tangy-spicy goodness.
To wrap up the meal, we had bee koe moy and pengat for dessert. The black glutinous rice was silky and deeply satisfying, while the pengat was thick, sweet, and comfortingâjust like how grandma might make it.
The ambience is charming and unpretentious, perfectly complementing the soulful food. Every dish was executed with such precision, and you could tell there was deep respect for tradition.
If youâre ever in Penang and love authentic Peranakan food, donât miss this place. Itâs not just a mealâitâs a culinary experience.
