Much further in Huangze Temple, the Wu Zetian Exhibition Hall offers visitors an insightful journey into the life and legacy of China's only female emperor. Many visitors might miss out this part because the temple has a rather huge compound and the exhibition hall is located somewhere uphill.
This dedicated space, however, showcases a curated collection of artifacts, historical records, and artistic representations that chronicle Wu Zetian's rise to power and her significant contributions to Chinese history.
Among the highlights is the 1.8-meter-tall sandstone statue of the empress, believed to be the only one in China modeled after her true appearance, depicting her in her later years adorned in Buddhist attire.
The exhibition also features detailed displays on the cultural and political landscape of the Tang Dynasty, providing context to Wu Zetian's reign and her efforts to promote women's participation in governance, such as permitting women to take imperial examinations and assigning government posts to those who passed.
