Highlights
Cathedral Cove is renowned for its natural stone arch, standing 18 meters tall and resembling a cathedral dome, connecting two serene bays. This location also served as a filming site for "The Chronicles of Narnia." The creamy white sand beaches and emerald green waters create a stunning contrast, while the surrounding Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve is perfect for snorkeling, offering close-up views of coral reefs and tropical fish.
Getting There
• By Car: Drive approximately 2.5 hours from Auckland along the Pacific Coast Highway. Navigate to Hahei Visitor Car Park (free, 25-minute walk to the trailhead) or Cathedral Cove Gateway Car Park (paid, with shuttle service directly to the site).
• By Water: Cathedral Cove Water Taxi provides round-trip services. Tickets cost NZD 80 for adults, with departures every 30 minutes and a 10-minute boat ride.
Tips
• Some sections of the trail are under maintenance, so wear non-slip shoes and avoid the hike if you lack physical stamina.
• The arch is accessible during low tide; return before high tide to avoid being stranded.
• Public restrooms are available at the trailhead and near Lees Road. The beach has no trash bins, so bring your own garbage bags.
