Speaking of Hangzhou's West Lake, how can we not mention Baidi Causeway? This "White Sand Causeway" from Bai Juyi's poems holds the most tender spring 🌿 and poetic winter ❄️ of Hangzhou.
📌What is Baidi Causeway?
Baidi Causeway is one of the three causeways of West Lake (along with Su Causeway and Yanggong Causeway). It starts from Broken Bridge in the east and ends at Pinghu Qiuyue in the west, with a total length of about 1 kilometer🚶♂️. Don't underestimate its short length; this is the "beauty representative" of West Lake—pink peach blossoms and green willows in spring🌸, swaying lotuses in summer🪐, fragrant osmanthus in autumn🍂, and snow-covered Broken Bridge in winter❄️. It's picturesque all year round!
🚶♂️How to explore Baidi Causeway?
Starting point: Broken Bridge 🌉
It is recommended to arrive at 7 am! Fewer people, beautiful scenery, and you can capture the reflection of Leifeng Pagoda🌅. Legend has it that this is where Xu Xian and Lady White Snake met.
Stroll along Baidi Causeway 🌿
✔️See the classic scenery of "one willow tree, one peach tree" (spring limited!)
✔️Enjoy the lake and mountain views at Jindaibridge; it's a super atmospheric spot for photos📸
✔️Find a bench by the lake and sit down to experience the leisure of "walking in a painting"
Destination: Pinghu Qiuyue 🎑
It's super romantic to come here to admire the moon at night!🌕 During the Mid-Autumn Festival, there is a marvelous sight of "the moon is exceptionally bright at Mid-Autumn." It's recommended to bring mooncakes to enjoy while watching (full of ritual).
🌟Must-visit attractions nearby
Xiling Seal Society 🖋️: A must-visit for culture lovers! The most prestigious seal carving society in China, even the climbing vines on the walls exude a scholarly atmosphere.
Solitary Hill ⛰️: If you're tired from walking, climb this 35-meter-high hill. The story of Lin Bu's "plum wife and crane son" took place here.
Tomb of Su Xiaoxiao 💐: A talented woman's legend + a poignant love story, suitable for couples (single dogs beware, it might make you emo).
🚗Transportation tips
Take Metro Line 1/2 to Fengqi Road Station, and it's a 15-minute walk.
Take Bus No. 1314 (what a romantic bus number!), which goes directly to Baidi Causeway.
Don't drive yourself! Parking spaces at West Lake are harder to get than Jay Chou concert tickets.
⏰Best time to visit
Spring (March-April): Pink peach blossoms and green willows are the best! It's recommended to go to Beishan Road to take panoramic photos of Baidi Causeway.
Winter (snowy days): Unlock the limited edition "Snow on the Broken Bridge," but snowing in Hangzhou is ≈ winning the lottery.
Avoid holidays: Otherwise, you'll experience what "crowds of people" really means.
💡Local insider tips
Take an evening stroll 🌆: Baidi Causeway is super quiet after the tourists leave. Sunset + lake breeze = a healing package.
Rent a bicycle 🚲: Cycling along the lake is super cool! (But you can't ride on Baidi Causeway).
Bring some cookies 🍪: There are many fat pigeons by the lake. Be careful of being "besieged" when feeding them.
🎒Essential items checklist
Sunscreen/hat (there's little shade on the causeway in summer)
Comfortable shoes (you have to walk 1 kilometer!)
Power bank (there are so many beautiful scenes, I'm afraid you'll run out of battery taking photos)
Finally, I want to say that the beauty of Baidi Causeway lies not in checking off how many attractions you've visited, but in the leisurely feeling of "strolling in the courtyard." Find a sunny day, buy a cup of Longjing tea, sit by the lake and watch the passing boats, and you'll suddenly understand—Bai Juyi's feeling of "never getting enough of walking along the east lake" has transcended a thousand years.
