Visiting TATOC in Harbin was one of the highlights of my trip. This restaurant is not just a place to eat, but a journey back in time. Established in 1901, it carries the charm of “Old Russia in Harbin” and is decorated with such attention to detail that you feel like you are stepping into another era. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere is warm, nostalgic, and a little theatrical – chandeliers, antique furniture, shelves of old books, and even a piano in the corner. It is truly a museum-like dining experience.
The menu reflects Harbin’s unique Russian-Chinese culinary heritage. I ordered the classic Harbin salad, served with the famous Dà Liè Bā bread, which was hearty and comforting. The borscht here is slightly sweeter than in Russia, but rich and flavorful, with sour cream served on the side. The beef Stroganoff was tender, perfectly seasoned, and came with mashed potatoes. The portions are generous, and everything feels authentic while also adapted to local tastes.
Service was attentive and polite, even though English is not widely spoken – the staff tried their best to help with explanations, and the menu includes English translations. Waiting times were reasonable, and dishes arrived freshly prepared.
What I liked most was the combination of history and dining. TATOC is more than a restaurant; it is a living reminder of Harbin’s multicultural past, when Russian emigrants brought their architecture, cuisine, and traditions to this northern Chinese city. Eating here feels like participating in that history.
I would recommend TATOC not only for the food, but also for the atmosphere and the story it tells. It’s the perfect place for anyone who wants to experience Harbin beyond sightseeing – through culture, taste, and history.
⭐ My rating: 5/5 – a must-visit in Harbin.
