The Floating Castle of Blossoms: My Solo Visit to Hirosaki Castle, Aomori

In the heart of Aomori Prefecture, Hirosaki Castle is a jewel of feudal Japan and one of the few castles in the country to retain its original tenshu (keep). Nestled within the expansive Hirosaki Park, it is a destination of breathtaking beauty, especially during the cherry blossom season. For a solo traveler, it’s a place of serene gardens, deep history, and unforgettable seasonal drama.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Morning – Original Keep & Samurai Grounds: I started by crossing the iconic red Megane-bashi (Spectacles Bridge) and entered the inner grounds of the castle. I spent time admiring the elegant, three-story main keep—one of only twelve original castle towers left in Japan. I then explored the restored eastern and northern turrets and the massive stone walls, imagining the Tsugaru clan who ruled from here.
· Afternoon – Park Strolls & Botanical Bliss: I dedicated the afternoon to wandering through the vast Hirosaki Park, which is also the Hirosaki Botanical Garden. I rented a rowboat to paddle through the petal-covered moats during cherry blossom season (sakura), or simply found a quiet bench to admire the fiery maple leaves in autumn (kōyō).
· Evening – Illuminations & Apple Pie: If visiting during the spring or autumn festivals, I stayed after dark to see the castle and thousands of cherry trees or maple trees spectacularly illuminated. I ended my day in a local café, trying Hirosaki’s famous apple pie—Aomori is Japan’s top apple-producing region.
