Qiandao Lake Viewing Platform is located in Tai Lam Chung Reservoir within Tai Lam Country Park in the New Territories. Built in 2019, it is nicknamed the "Hong Kong Version of Qiandao Lake" because the many small islands in the reservoir resemble those of Zhejiang's Qiandao Lake. The viewing platform offers a 270-degree panoramic view. In spring and summer, when the reservoir is full, the islands are scattered like stars; in autumn and winter, you can enjoy the red leaves of Tai Tong, making it a popular hiking photo spot.
Morning: Hiking to the Viewing Platform Start from Tai Tong in Yuen Long, take the red minibus or K66 bus to Tai Tong Shan Road stop, then follow Tai Lam Forest Track via MacLehose Trail Section 10 (M181-M182). It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the viewing platform. The first part of the route is a flat asphalt road, and the latter part has steps, suitable for beginners. The platform overlooks the reservoir, where islands and mountains intertwine, creating a magnificent view.
Noon: Picnic and Rest There are no restaurants near the viewing platform, so it is recommended to bring your own light meals to picnic at the Tai Tong BBQ site, which has snack stalls and free water dispensers. Alternatively, rest by the Wong Nai Tun Reservoir nearby and enjoy the tranquil scenery of the small reservoir.
Afternoon: Red Leaves and Exploration In autumn (November to December), you can visit the Tai Tong Maple Forest to capture the fiery red maple leaves. Continue along the MacLehose Trail to So Kwun Wat Village, about a 1-hour descent. Along the way, you can see silvergrass (in autumn). Or return to Tai Tong to explore the pastoral scenery of Pok Kung Au.
Transportation and Tips
Transportation: From Yuen Long Station, take K66 or the red minibus to Tai Tong; for the return trip, take minibus 43 from So Kwun Wat to Tuen Mun. Drivers can park at Tai Tong Car Park ($50/day).
Time: The whole trip takes about 3-4 hours. It is recommended to start between 7-8 AM to avoid holiday crowds.
Tips: Wear hiking shoes, bring water (at least 1 liter), sunscreen, and insect repellent. Do not leave the viewing platform fence to protect the vegetation. Take your trash with you and care for the environment.
