Today, we’re sharing our experience of a 16-hour layover in Hong Kong, exploring the city with a budget of 1,000 Baht!
🛫 We traveled from Chiang Mai to Taipei with a 16-hour layover in Hong Kong, flying with Cathay Pacific (the Chiang Mai to Hong Kong leg was operated by HK Express). We departed Chiang Mai at 11:00 and arrived in Hong Kong at 15:00.
After passing immigration, we bought train tickets to the city, getting off at 📍Hong Kong Station >> stopped for dim sum at 📍Dim Sum Square >> then took the tram to explore the city and got off at 📍Causeway Bay >> after that, we took the train from Causeway Bay to Hong Kong Station and then the train back to the airport.
Total expenses:
- Round-trip airport train group tickets: $153 per person (~630฿)
- Dim Sum Square: $198 for 3 people, $66 each (~270฿)
- Tram fare: $3 (~12฿)
- Train from Causeway Bay to Hong Kong Station: $6 (~25฿)
💸 Total: 937 Baht!
If you have a layover in Hong Kong, you can definitely go out and explore, but make sure to manage your time well to get back to the airport on time.
📍 For those with long layovers, we recommend booking flights with checked-through baggage to make traveling easier and to be able to return to the gate to rest.
🛌 You can rest at the airport gate if you have a boarding pass for your next flight. If you don’t have a boarding pass for the next flight, you must stay in the outer area and wait to check in before entering the gate area.
