Taiwan's Kiwis sample Hualien cuisine
Three kiwi children from Taiwan visited Hong Kong this year: Green apple, orange, and lavender—I finally got to go out to North Point and enjoy some Taiwanese food from my hometown. Today was beautiful and warm, so I decided to try beef noodles, fried chicken, and taro balls with three-color grass jelly! It was affordable and delicious, and I'll definitely come back next time!
Hualien Braised Beef Three Treasures Handmade Noodles
Taiwanese beef noodles are world-famous! The Beef Three Treasures consists of two pieces of beef shank heart, two pieces of beef tripe, and three pieces of beef tendon. Every bite is incredibly meaty! The tendon is perfectly cooked and collagen-rich, while the tendon has a subtle hint of tendon that adds a nice texture. This is probably the restaurant's specialty.
Medicinal Huadiao Half-Tendon Half-Meat Handmade Noodles
I also opted for the extra-large bowl of the Medicinal Huadiao Half-Tendon Half-Meat Handmade Noodles, which comes with two slices of beef tendon and two large chunks of beef. The quality is just as good as the Beef Three Treasures. The noodles are also chewy and firm, with a thicker texture. The medicinal broth is moderately flavorful and clear, and comes with cordyceps. Flower, wolfberry, and chopped green onion—very healthy!
Traditional Cheese Taro and Pork Floss Omelet
Taiwan's most popular cheese taro and pork floss omelet has become quite popular in Hong Kong in recent years. The omelet crust is chewy, and the taro and pork floss filling is the perfect savory and sweet combination.
Shilin Crispy Chicken
For a snack, we chose crispy chicken, a classic Taiwanese night market snack. The chicken pieces are marinated with five-spice powder, coated in sweet potato starch, and deep-fried at high heat. Basil is then added to sauté and sprinkled with pepper and salt. The crispy texture and rich aroma are truly a favorite.
Traditional Grass Jelly Three-Color Taro Balls
Finally, we opted for dessert. The three-color taro balls come in taro, sweet potato, and purple sweet potato, all very chewy. The grass jelly is soft and smooth, and paired with the evaporated milk base, it's incredibly satisfying.
