Ever since Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman's yellow duck first made a splash at Keelung Harbor, Hualien has followed suit with a red-faced Muscovy duck. Every summer, the Hualien Red-faced Duck FUN Summer Vacation event takes place at Liyu Lake in Shoufeng Township. In addition to the original red-faced duck, numerous ducklings have since been added, adding to the sights of the lake. The event also features other attractions to attract tourists. Liyu Lake, located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, covers an area of approximately 104 hectares and is the largest inland lake in Hualien County. It is named after Liyu Mountain, which stands to the east of the lake. A 4-kilometer-long road circles the lake. Liyu Lake is not only beautifully surrounded by mountains, but also offers numerous water activities and scenic views. It's also a popular spot for firefly viewing, especially from April to May. During this period, fireflies are abundant around Liyu Lake, and nighttime firefly tours and explanations have become a local specialty. However, the Red-faced Duck FUN Summer Vacation event has lost its appeal in recent years, and the ducks will be withdrawn from Liyu Lake this year. This year's theme has been changed to "Summer Vacation in Hualien." Previously nighttime activities have been rescheduled for daytime, hoping to attract more tourists to Hualien and boost business for nearby businesses. Although the red-faced ducks are no longer visible, Liyu Lake has installed an inflatable owl this year. Liyu Lake hopes to attract more visitors through this revised program.
