Binzhou may not be as famous as Qingdao or Jinan, but it is definitely a "hidden gem" city that can surprise you. It lacks the hustle and bustle of big cities, but offers the grandeur of the Yellow River flowing into the sea, a rich military cultural heritage, and a slow-paced lifestyle.
First stop: Experience the wisdom of the "Saint of War" and the charm of the ancient city
The first stop of our Binzhou trip must be Sun Tzu's Art of War City in Huimin County. Don’t think it’s just an ordinary ancient city gate; it’s the hometown of the "Saint of War" Sun Wu! As soon as you enter the magnificent city gate, it feels like you’ve instantly traveled back to the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. The antique-style halls and corridors inside are not only beautiful but also deeply infused with the wisdom of "The Art of War." Concepts like "All warfare is based on deception" and "Know yourself and know your enemy" are vividly interpreted through these buildings and exhibitions. Even if you’re not a military enthusiast, you’ll be amazed by this ancient Eastern wisdom and think, "So war is an art!" While wandering around the city, you might even catch some live-action performances, which are especially interesting.
After leaving the Art of War City, you can conveniently visit the nearby Wei Family Manor. This is the most complete castle-style residence remaining in northern China, quite different from the courtyard styles in Shanxi. With tall city walls and a tight defense system, it feels less like a home and more like a military fortress. Inside, the deep courtyards and exquisite carvings let you deeply feel the refinement and grandeur of an ancient wealthy family. Take some photos here and post them on social media; the style is absolutely top-notch.
Second stop: Witness the unparalleled spectacle of the Yellow River meeting the sea
When in Binzhou, you must not miss the world wonder of the "Yellow and Blue Confluence"! Head to the Yellow River Delta Ecotourism Area. I recommend setting aside most of a day because this place is really vast.
Once inside, I strongly suggest taking a boat to the Yellow River estuary. When you see the muddy, surging yellow river water collide and blend with the clear, deep blue sea water, forming a distinct dividing line, the natural spectacle is beyond words. It truly embodies the famous line, "Do you not see the Yellow River’s waters descending from heaven, rushing to the sea and never returning?"
This area is also a "bird paradise" with excellent ecological conditions. If you visit in spring or autumn, you can see thousands of migratory birds, including red-crowned cranes and Oriental white storks, dancing in the sky—a truly magnificent scene. Even normally, the reeds in the wetlands and the leisurely waterfowl create a particularly soothing picture. Remember to bring your camera and wear comfortable shoes to walk slowly and take in the views; your heart will feel especially open.
Third stop: Leisure and "sweetness" in the city
Back in downtown Binzhou, don’t rush to hit more attractions; just enjoy the local slow life. You can stroll around Zhonghai Scenic Area or Qinhuang River Park. In the evening, feel the breeze while walking by the lake, watching locals fish, exercise, and take walks—you’ll realize life can be this pleasant.
Speaking of Binzhou’s food, you must try Guozi Bing and sesame crisp candy. Guozi Bing has a crispy crust and is packed with filling; a warm bite fills your mouth with fragrance! Sesame crisp candy is sweet but not greasy, so crispy it crumbles—an excellent gift to bring home for friends and family. Binzhou’s winter jujubes are also a must-try if you come in autumn; they’re crisp and sweet, guaranteed to make you want more.
Here are some key points for you:
· Best seasons: Spring and autumn (April-May, September-October). The weather is comfortable, you can see migratory birds, and the winter jujubes are ripe.
· Suggested itinerary: 2-3 days recommended. Day 1: Art of War City and Wei Family Manor; Day 2: full day at the Yellow River Delta; Day 3: leisure and food in the city.
· Transportation: Binzhou now has high-speed rail, making travel much easier. You can take taxis or buses between city attractions.
· Mindset: Slow down and don’t rush to check off spots. The beauty of Binzhou requires you to calm down and savor it slowly.
Binzhou is a place where you can let go of fatigue and fully enjoy history and nature. Wishing you a happy and fulfilling trip in Binzhou!
