The Qingyang Mao Ancestral Hall in Quzhou exudes a subtle sense of pride and honor

Located in Qingyang Village, Jiangshan City, Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, this site is the birthplace of the Mao clan in southern China and the ancestral home of the great leader Mao Zedong, with a history spanning over 1,400 years. The village has produced 8 ministers and 83 imperial scholars throughout history.

According to the "Qingyang Mao Clan Genealogy," the Mao clan originally lived in northern China. The eighth-generation ancestor Mao Yuanqiong (styled Qingyang) migrated here during the Datong era of Emperor Wu of Liang (535-546 AD). His descendants named the village Qingyang after his honorific name.

Walking through Qingyang Village, one can feel the profound cultural atmosphere and long historical heritage everywhere. If the white-walled, black-tiled Huizhou-style architecture represents the village's appearance, then the solemn and majestic Mao Ancestral Hall embodies its soul. The plaque inscribed with "Prominent Family of Xihe" quietly radiates pride and honor.

The Mao Ancestral Hall was first built during the Song Dynasty and reconstructed in the Qing Dynasty. Due to its age, only partial remnants remained. In 2010, Jiangshan City invested 18.6 million yuan to rebuild it on the original site in Qing Dynasty architectural style.

The reconstructed Qingyang Mao Ancestral Hall is solemn, dignified, elegant, and simple. The hall features a symmetrical layout with three courtyards and two main halls. It includes the Hejing Hall, Zhuiyuan Hall, an opera stage, the Mao Family Celebrity Exhibition Hall, and the Mao Zedong Exhibition Hall, covering an area of 2,452 square meters.

Among all descendants of the Qingyang Mao clan, the most famous is undoubtedly Mao Zedong, the 56th-generation direct descendant. Coincidentally, Chiang Kai-shek's first wife, Mao Fumei, was also a descendant of the Qingyang Mao clan and belonged to the same generation as Mao Zedong. The Mao Zedong Exhibition Hall vividly presents the extraordinary life of this great man through images and texts.
