Although this is my second trip to Tokyo, I discovered a hidden gem just an hour away by Shinkansen—in Karuizawa: the Ando Museum, dedicated to the French-Japanese painter Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968), established by his patrons, the Ando couple.
Besides Karuizawa’s shopping streets and unique churches, the museum is about a 20-minute walk from the Shinkansen station. Foujita’s artwork blends Japanese manga with academic sketching styles, especially his series of girls and cats. The cats show a mix of anthropomorphic expressions and wildness, while the girls are calm and serene—two beautiful contrasts. 🐱👧💫
By the way, there’s local specialty coffee freely available in the demonstration room on the first floor—a perfect blend of art and coffee that’s super healing! ☕️💖
