During my short stay in Kumamoto, I was left with a very good impression. The adorable Kumamon mascot can be seen everywhere in the city, bringing a lot of warmth and friendliness. The retro tram runs through the city’s main roads, adding a nostalgic charm that makes the atmosphere unique and cozy.

Kumamoto Castle, the city’s core landmark, is a must-visit. Although the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake caused significant damage to many buildings, plenty of restoration work is still visible today. The main keep of Kumamoto Castle was fully restored in 2021 and looks stunning. Inside, it has been transformed into a museum that tells the castle’s history along a clear chronological path. The official Kumamoto Castle app offers audio guides, which are especially helpful for non-Japanese speakers, allowing every visitor to deeply appreciate this historic site’s charm.
