In addition to the famous Izumi Shrine and Noh Hall, the classic scenic spot "Suizenji Jojuen" in Kumamoto City also has three cultural and natural attractions worth savoring. Whether you want to learn about the history of the Higo Hosokawa family, explore the essence of ancient and modern Waka, or immerse yourself in the quiet garden with hundreds of cherry blossoms in full bloom in March, you can find your own moment of tranquility in this historic Japanese garden.
1. Sakura Hiroba|150 cherry blossoms × Spring Pond × Spring Garden Stroll
The strolling garden "Sakura Hiroba" designed with the Ezu Lake Spring Pond as the center has about 150 pink cherry blossoms. The best time to enjoy the flowers is from late March to early April every year. Strolling slowly along the Tsukiyama, pine trees and pumice paths, the garden is filled with a dreamy atmosphere under the spring breeze. Although the night cherry blossoms will not be opened in 2025, you can still enjoy the elegant scenery of nature and design during the day. In addition, the "Suizenji Jojuen Maru" every spring also adds a humanistic atmosphere to this garden.
2. Kokindenshū no Kan|Waka Secret × Samurai Glory × Architectural Beauty
This ancient hip-and-gable building has a history of more than 400 years. It was originally located in the Kyoto Imperial Palace. It was the place where Hosokawa Fujitaka taught the "Kokin Wakashu" to Prince Hachijo Tomohiro, the younger brother of Emperor Goyozei. "Kokindenshū" is a way of teaching waka that can only be passed on by word of mouth, which is extremely authoritative and sacred. The interior of the building retains many historical details such as the Yakusugi sliding door, Kano Eitoku ink painting relics, "Go-Seven Paulownia" pattern, fire lamp window frame view pond and "Kokindenshū no Matsu" tree stump, which not only shows the relationship between ancient Japanese literature and the royal family, but also reflects the fusion of samurai spirit and aesthetics.
3. Oyasumi-chu|Air-conditioned rest × Historical exhibition × Beautiful view of the front square
The air-conditioned "Oyasumi-chu" in the park is not only the best place to rest, but also a cultural exhibition space. Here, the local history of Kumamoto and the development background of the Higo Hosokawa family are introduced, allowing people to get intellectual replenishment during a short stay. What's even better is that you can directly overlook the greenery and openness of the front square through the window view, which upgrades the entire rest experience. It is an excellent place for both culture and nature.
