A Serene Encounter at Zhang Hall in Zhouzhuang

Accidentally stepping into Zhang Hall in Zhouzhuang, I encountered the tranquil charm of Jiangnan.

In the timeless atmosphere of Zhouzhuang, Zhang Hall holds the gentlest dreams of the water town. Walking along the ancient stone-paved path and pushing open the weathered wooden door, you enter the world of Zhang Hall. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty and named Yishun Hall, it was later renamed Yuyan Hall when it came under the ownership of the Zhang family in the early Qing Dynasty. Today, people simply call it Zhang Hall.

Entering the front hall, the courtyard is quietly adorned with greenery, and the shell-shaped windows of the side rooms exude a sense of warmth polished by time. Sunlight streams through the windows, casting dappled patterns on the ground, as if narrating stories of the past. The main hall is spacious and bright, with wooden drum stools beneath the columns silently showcasing the unique charm of Ming Dynasty architecture. Inside the hall, Ming-style rosewood furniture is neatly arranged, and calligraphy and paintings hang quietly on the walls. A couplet reading "Sedans enter through the front door, boats pass through the house" perfectly encapsulates the ingenious layout of Zhang Hall.

Following the dim and narrow passageway, your footsteps instinctively lighten. The soot-darkened niches along the passage bear the marks of time. As you walk further, the view suddenly opens up, and the scenery of the backyard comes into sight. The Zhujing River meanders through, its clear waters reflecting the white walls and black tiles along the banks. Small boats gently sway on the river, and the soft singing of the boatwomen drifts through the air, adding a poetic touch.

In the rear garden, bamboo sways gracefully, and roses bloom in quiet elegance. The Taihu rock formation "Yuyan Peak" stands tall and exquisite, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to this small haven. Standing in the garden, taking a deep breath, the air is filled with the fragrance of flowers and the freshness of greenery, as if all worries are soothed by the ancient charm of this place.

Here, there is no noise, no chaos—only the serenity and beauty left behind by the passage of time. Every corner, every play of light and shadow, is worth savoring.
