This Duku Highway, crossing the Tianshan Mountains from north to south, is a must-visit scenic road in Xinjiang! The Danxia landforms, canyons, and snow-capped mountains along the way are breathtakingly beautiful. Driving the entire route feels like traveling through a giant gallery 🚗✨
Stunning Natural Gallery
The elevation changes along the Duku Highway near Kuitun are visually striking! It’s recommended to visit on a sunny day, as the Danxia landforms display more vibrant colors under the sunlight. The road winds through the canyons, and you can stop to take photos anytime; every turn brings a new surprise.
Tips
1. The whole route is about 350 kilometers, so plan a full day to drive leisurely.
2. Summer (June to September) is the best season; the road may be closed in winter due to avalanche risks.
3. Remember to fill up your gas tank in Kuitun before setting off, as there are few supply points along the way.
4. Bring snacks and water; the scenery is so beautiful you can picnic anytime.
Stops
You can rest in Dushanzi city along the way and try the local hand-pulled rice and Nang pit buns. If you return to Kuitun in the evening, be sure to visit the West Park Night Market to try the roasted whole lamb, a solid taste of authentic Xinjiang flavor!
Guide
The temperature difference is huge! Onion-style dressing is recommended:
- Short sleeves + sun protection clothing (for daytime sun protection)
- Light down jacket/windbreaker (for warmth in the morning and evening)
- Sunglasses + hat (essential for sun protection)
Tips
⚠ Mobile signal is intermittent along the route; it’s recommended to download offline maps in advance.
⚠ The road has many sharp turns; novice drivers should be extra cautious.
⚠ There are few restrooms along the way; don’t miss service areas when you find them.
